Description
RARE 1930s Shirley Temple depression glass footed sugar bowl. Emerald green in color and has the same decal as the blue mug only considerably smaller. NOT a reproduction piece. There also was a matching creamer. The market hasn't been flooded nor has there been more than a few surfacing. Aside from the chip on the base it is in very good condition. This piece has been examined and even by experts. The 1930's decals were made of tiny glass beads and have a pixel or dots pattern to them. Closeup photos clearly show the "dots" from the glass beads. The reproductions do not have this. In 1990 a collector (Bob) displayed a handful of depression glass items all using some variation of the decals used on the common blue glass pieces. Pieces included a Moderntone plate with the mug images, tumbler with smaller Captain January image, child's teacup with tiny mug image, all in blue, and the emerald green sugar/creamer with the miniature mug images. All were genuine pieces. It was determined that these were either "after market" creations using decals taken from the factory by an enterprising worker, or prototypes for proposed pieces that were never made. The Temple’s did not grant licensing to everyone.
It isn't known if other companies were considered before Hazel Atlas got the license to make the mug, bowl and creamer. The Fostoria museum was contacted but they do not have records of proposed contracts or prototype designs the company may have been involved in from the 1930s. Nonetheless this sugar bowl is indeed a rare find.
