There are two common frequency bands that all cell phone carriers use.  The Cellular band commonly
referred to as 1900 uses the frequencies
1850-1990.
The other band is PCS which is the 800 MHz band
uses frequencies in the 824-894 range.  The following

list with help determining the frequency
your carrier / phone uses:
Cingular (AT&T)
= Both frequencies but primarily 1900MHz
800MHz and 1900MHz (includes 3G)
Sprint
= 1900MHz
T-Mobile
= 1900MHz
Verizon
= Voice Primarily 800MHz (CDMA) some 1900MHz in certain areas
